Johnson Receives Global Citizenship Award

Tenafly, NJ - January 26, 2010 - Basketball legend and world icon, Earvin "Magic" Johnson came to Tenafly Sunday, January 24 to support Global Care Unlimited, Inc (GCU), visited with the GCU students, coached a game, smiled that famous smile, and wowed a crowd of 800 at the Tenafly High School. At the sold-out benefit dinner, Magic made a surprise donation to GCU from his own foundation and raffled off seven Lakers tickets, enabling GCU to raise $65,000 to construct a high school wing at its Ethiopian sister school and offer aid to Doctors Without Borders in support of their Haitian relief effort.

"Words cannot begin to describe the impact this man had on all of us," said Mark Hyman, school teacher, human rights activist, and founder of Global Care Unlimited, Inc. "We are elated to have Magic Johnson come to Tenafly Middle School through the generosity of Debi Couri-D'Amico, parent and dedicated volunteer. He came to our community and with compassion and grace, hosted our events to benefit the student club of GCU and its Ethiopian School initiative as well as the Haitian relief effort. He is a true global citizen."

GCU presented Johnson with its first - ever Global Citizenship award for his commitment to touching the lives of children in Ethiopia and around the world. In addition, the Ethio-American Friendship School will dedicate its high school wing to Johnson for his inspirational role in building the classrooms enabling its students to earn their high school diplomas.

GCU students have labored since 2007 to raise funds to sponsor the construction of 12 classrooms in grades Pre-K through Grade 8 in the town of Awassa, Ethiopia. Now these same students managed to raise enough funds to construct more classrooms through Grades 9 through 10 which will complete their school through the Ethiopian high school grades.
